Generous Music will be sharing a bill once again with Ian Turner, who’s music is nothing short of breath-snatching. Our band will be sitting in with him for a couple of songs as well as playing our own full set. The show kicks off around 8 with Ian’s set (featuring Spider on Violin and Akie Bermiss on keys) followed by Srch Party (a band with minimal web presence, so I don’t even know what they sound like) followed by our show, which will be peppered with some choice 70′s and 90′s deep cuts in amongst our rock-and-soul bag of tricks.

This is an exciting time in Generous Music land! Work has begun on the next record, tentatively titled The Slow Work. We are recording at a fine studio to 2-inch tape and it’s a thrill. The band: Akie Bermiss, Mark Wixom and Andrew Gillespie. The tunes: Soulful, rocking, hooky and rich. The release: Fall, 2011. I’ll be dropping little teasers as we go along.

I’ll be bringing the whole band out for a stinging good time on JULY 23 at 9pm at Bar 4 (15th st and 7th ave, Park Slope Brooklyn). It’s gonna smoke…literally. I look forward to seeing you there!

...just right...

My visit to Los Angeles was phenomenal. This was my 4th visit here, but the first where I really got it. It the past it just struck me as a dissipated, sprawling lamesville, but it turns out I just wasn’t hanging out with the right people. My dear friends Olentangy John and Patrick Bourland, along with the always excellent Lizzie Eggert welcomed me with carrots, absinthe and a show in a funny french restaurant. The night grew surreal after John went to bed, leaving Pat and I to roam Sunset Blvd in Echo Park playing guitar and mandolin. We quickly found our third bandmate in the form of a kindly Mexican homeless man pushing a shopping cart. He established himself as bandleader, calling La Bamba, Guantanamera, and finally, a rubato, experimental Ave Maria (recordings will be posted later, as I have 25 minutes of iPhone voice memo to edit down).

My adventures continued, to be chronicled in bullets:

Had lunch with Michael Skloff, writer of all the music for “Friends” (including the clap clap clap clap thing). Totally sweet guy writing beautiful Jewish liturgical music these days
Met with Seth Kaplan at Evolution Music Partners–maybe a licensing deal is in the cards?
Played beautiful custom guitars at Old Style Guitars, which lead to a wonderful show with Kelly Jones and Mike Viola.
Played mandolin and drums at a Tom Petty sing-along
Jammed with Charlyne Yi at said party
Sang an Aliyah in my cousin’s Bar Mitzah
Met a man who writes music for Barbie-themed straight-to-DVD releases from Mattel (a very nice man)
Finished the weekend like I started it: Pacifique, Olentangy, Pat, Lizzie, a guitar, and many many songs: Some originals, some Joni, some vintage Elephant Army, some jazz standards and LOTS of Gillian Welch. I recorded a spontaneous arrangement we did of Ruination Day. If it sounds good I’ll post it.

LA, you have been abundant with your gifts on this trip. Thank you.

On October 15th, We will be very excited to share a bill with Pat Hull and Camp, Noriega & Dunn. I used to freak out with my roommate in college listening to Mr. Bungle, so it’s pretty exciting to be on a bill with Mr. Dunn, not to mention the other wonderful talented folks on this bill. Just tell ‘em you’re there to see us The show is at the Brooklyn Ethical Society at 53 Prospect Park West (at 2nd St). Show at 8, doors and 7:45.

Two Hudson Valley Gigs in October! (10/1 and 10/14)

Greetings! This early fall has been very active with a number of projects, and I’m happy to announce that I will be doing some Generous Music shows with the full band in the coming month.

You can hear the whole band (including special guest Akie Bermiss) at the mid-Hudson Valley’s best listening room, The Falcon Center, on October 14th at 7PM. Located in Marlboro, NY, The Falcon is a delight for performer and audience alike–cozy, friendly atmosphere, great restaurant and bar, clean air and roaring waterfall just outside. We are delighted to be opening up for a good friend (and my former landlord) Ryan Keberle with is double quartet. Ryan is a fantastic trombonist, and he’ll be leading his wonderful band through material from his recent release, “Heavy Dreaming”. Ryan is also featured on “Full Moon” from my first record, “Generous Music.” Listen here.

Earlier in the month, on October 1 at 9pm, you can catch Mark Wixom (our delightful Bassist) and I playing a duo set at Market Market Cafe in Rosendale, NY. Opening for us will be Seth Davis We played here in April and it was one of the most fun concerts we’ve done. The room is cozy, with a country/hippie cafe feeling–and they have the East Coast’s finest IPA, Keegan Ales Hurricane Kitty, on tap. This will be a wonderful evening.
